Two and Half Years

The boys are currently two years and five months old.  They will be exactly 2.5 years old on my due date. The last several months have been a lot of fun. People discuss the "terrible two's" but I have enjoyed this age very much.  I like that they are so interactive now and can have real discussions with us.  I thought I would write about some milestones and what the boys have been up to the last several months:

  • Both boys are now potty trained.  Can I get an amen?  As previously mentioned, Abraham picked it up pretty quickly when I decided to push the issue this past April.  Winston quietly observed his brother using the potty frequently and liked the idea of wearing underwear but did not want to go there himself.  At the beginning of June, he asked to wear underwear.  I explained to him that if he wore underwear that he would need to use the potty.  He then would have an accident and freak out.  He is very intense about things and I think his perfectionistic tendencies made him anxious when he would make a mistake.  He then would ask for a diaper and the cycle would continue.  I realized very quickly that I was reinforcing some very undesirable behavior and just knew I had to push through it.  I gave him underwear to wear and did not allow him to go back to a diaper.  He cried a lot at first because he did not want to use the potty but within three days he had it mastered.  It really is amazing how quickly they can catch on and I am an unabashed believer now in parent directed early(ier) potty training.  I just realize how it can be reinforced in a young child that soiling them self in a diaper is normative behavior.  Trying to come back away from that is very, very difficult once a parent decides that a child is "ready."  I have found that many parents that gladly sleep train their babies still have a big belief in the modern idea of child readiness when it comes to potty training.  There have been some hiccups and growing pains with the boys understanding how to time their need to have a bowel movement and tell us with plenty of warning but they have it worked out now.  I do not want to make it sound like potty training was just bunches of fun but it was nowhere near the hardship and struggle that some parents make it out to be.  For anyone that is curious, I definitely would recommend Rosemond's Toilet Training Without Tantrums.  Again, for parents that subscribe to child readiness when it comes to toilet training, this book is not for you but I found it very valuable.  If you have specific questions about how we potty trained our twins, feel free to e-mail me directly.

Winston spends some time on the toilet while Abraham supervises his reading.

  • We are at the age of more mischief.  The boys finally realized about three months ago that they could climb out of their cribs.  This led to them walking out of their bedroom and into ours. First step was to put a door knob cover on the inside of their bedroom door.  They initially defeated it but after being corrected have decided to leave it alone. Next we converted the cribs into day beds and they made the transition very easily.  Since we needed a crib for the baby we decided to buy them a big bed to share.  I found a very lightly used full sized bed for a great price.  Down the road we will invest in bunk beds or twin beds for all the boys.  A&W are on one side of the room while the baby's crib is on the other side.  Eventually all three boys will share a room.

I made the mistake of leaving baby powder in their room.  Winston dumped it all over Abraham.

First night in their big bed.  They kept climbing into each other's cribs so this seemed like a good solution.
  • The boys are learning important truths about God and His world.  I have not been formally catechizing the boys but have been working on some questions and answers with them.  When asked, they can tell you that God made them, that Jesus is God and that Jesus is their Savior and Rescuer.  We are teaching them how to pray and it is a dear thing to hear their sweet little voices say "I love you, Jesus" or "Please forgive my sins."  We pray for our boys everyday that they would come to a saving knowledge and faith in our Lord.  Being a parent myself, I now fully understand this burden that Christian parents have for their children.  It can be overwhelming, especially as their sin nature becomes so apparent, but pray we can be faithful in teaching them just as our Heavenly Father is so faithful in loving us.
  •  The boys love water and had so much fun when we were in So Cal playing in their grandparents' pool.  We got them puddle jumpers and they became fearless about jumping right in.  Abraham was especially bold. I was happy to see that they did not mind their face being in the water and were not scared by it.   I had wanted to get them into swimming lessons this summer but it never ended up happening.  I definitely look forward to doing it next summer with them.
Popping up after a dunk with papa
  • They are affectionate and loving little boys.  They both spontaneously ask for and give hugs and kisses to me and their papa.  They frequently say "I love you" and I am grateful for their affectionate nature.
  • And on the flip side of that, they are becoming very opinionated and bossy.  What can I say?  We were blessed with two first borns.  They struggle with back talk at times.  I can tell one of the boys to do something and there comes an indignant "No, mama."  Yeah, that obviously does not fly around here.  The hardest thing with discipline is just being consistent.  They like to boss one another around as well, especially Abraham.  Frequent phrases we hear include "Don't do that!" and "Don't push me!"  Sigh.  The days where they argue a lot can be wearing.  I know this season will not last forever and I will miss the two-year old stage.
  • These boys have very, very active imaginations.  Closets become elevators, blocks and legos are converted into a variety of household appliances such as a popcorn maker, their toy golf bags are vacuums which they use to help me clean up, laundry baskets are pushed and called lawn mowers and the list goes on and on.  Abraham is really into it and does the full sound effects as well.  It is sweet to see them be so entertained by simple things and to gladly receive something when they tell me "Mama, try it."  I always pretend that the lego stack filled crumpled tissue paper really is a cup of coffee.  This is a precious age and I hope Eric and I can continue to encourage that sense of play and imagination.
  • They love music and seem to have a knack for picking up lyrics.  They started asking for "Adele music" and I realized they were singing a long.  Since they are so impressionable at this age, it convicted me to try to minimize their exposure to secular music and stick with Bible songs, hymns and praise music.  I know I sound like a broken record but when your child recognizes the opening chords to "Holy, Holy, Holy" and starts to sing along, it is a special blessing.

We love you, bubbas, and look forward to seeing you be big brothers very soon!

Third Trimester

Today is a special day in that Baby Seymour is officially 37 weeks and considered full term.  The real count down is finally on!  People ask me when I am due and I just say the second week of September.  The Maternal Fetal Medicine doc gave me a September 8th due date and my regular OB had either the 9th or the 10th.  Based on the 10th, which is what my OB's office is going by, our little man is full term and could safely arrive at any time.

28 weeks

30.5 weeks

So the million dollar question:  How are you feeling?  Today I am great and feel like I could be pregnant forever.  Yesterday I was tired and miserable.  I honestly just have my good days and bad days.  I try to take the good days and get lots of stuff done around the house because the next day I may be laying on the couch with the boys while I let them watch TV.  I had a pretty good false labor run the second week of August but eventually knew it was not the real thing. Having contractions for over 6 hours that were five minutes apart and a minute in duration did take it out of me for a couple of days.  I am grateful that the baby stayed put and now I plan on upping my activity and walking to help my body prep for labor.  At 36 weeks I was only a fingertip dilated but my cervix was already soft.  At 36-37 weeks with the boys, I was not dilated and my cervix was rigid so I was happy to hear that my body seems to be on board with what needs to happen this time around.  I want to avoid medical induction by all means necessary.  I have been taking evening primrose oil and drinking raspberry leaf tea to help prep my body for labor.  Will it actually help? I have no idea but I figure it is worth a shot.

35 weeks

The whole summer pregnancy has been overall really enjoyable. I thought it would be difficult with the heat but I enjoy the warmer weather and I am not miserable at all.  I like that I can wear a maxi skirt or dress and look entirely appropriate.  I have not had swelling this pregnancy so I still have my wedding ring on and my feet look completely normal.  It has been nice to compare and contrast the winter vs. summer pregnancies.

I am asked a lot if this pregnancy is different than when I was pregnant with our twin boys. The answer is both yes and no.  Pregnancy can have difficult aspects and symptoms and I have experienced them in both of my pregnancies.  In general, the pregnancy with our twins was much more difficult in the second and third trimesters.  This pregnancy was harder in the first trimester due to more intense morning sickness and my subchorionic hemorrhage but since then has been very easy.  Most everything with the twin pregnancy was a lot more intense--the heartburn, rib pain, back pain, insomnia, congestion, pitted edema, etc.  To put it into perspective,  I delivered the boys at 37 weeks and my uterus was measuring at 48 weeks.  I had spent most of my third trimester with the fundal height of a woman carrying a full term baby.  Now I am 37 weeks and I am measuring about 37 weeks.  I can do this and I can hang on like this for quite a while.  I have a short torso so I carry entirely out but my doc says the baby is not looking big at all.  Since I had a 7 lb. 9 oz. twin, I am very thankful to hear that.

36.5 weeks- heading out to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary

Now that I am 37 weeks, I will have Eric take another pic and we can do a belly shot comparison of a twin vs. singleton pregnancy.  One thing I have also really enjoyed about this pregnancy is being able to nest. We moved about ten days before the boys were born so I never got the opportunity to really organize and clean how I wanted to.  We were simply trying to get the house to be functional.  It totally was thanks to the help of family and friends but there were still boxes that had not been touched months after the twins were born.  This time around it feels good to organize a closet, sort through paper work, etc. and feel like the house is getting ready for our little arrival.

Eric and I feel very blessed that our baby is doing so well and look forward to sharing our happy news once he finally makes his appearance.

Five Years

Yep, I am still around.  I am more than 36 weeks pregnant and have been too busy either nesting or in a pure state of exhaustion to follow through with blogging. But it is my anniversary today and I want to write about that because it inspires me.  Five years of marriage to my Eric.  Our life is far from perfect but we do know that we are incredibly blessed.

On Facebook this past week, I had several friends post an article entitled God Loves Odd Couples.  The article discusses how God delights in making marriages thrive that do not seem to make sense to an outside world.  The one line "He loves couples where the husband loves hunting and the wife is a vegetarian" hit home because that was us.  I remember when Eric first started calling me and we were getting to know one another, thinking "I do not have anything in common with this guy that loves hunting, fishing, MMA and lives in rural Nevada."  He was not my type and I was not really his.  Yet God has blessed our union and we continue to grow more alike as the time passes on.  My husband thrives on vegetarian food and feels great eating that way while I now eat meat a couple times a week because I need it metabolically. People cautioned Eric that I was independent and career minded and five years later I am a stay at home mom. I do not think I could be too much more dependent and vulnerable than that.  I like that God has a sense of humor, that He sees things through His infinite wisdom far better than you or I could ever imagine.  I like knowing He made my love story to sanctify me and make me more like Him.

Five years is still not very much time but it feels like we are out the baby stage of marriage.  We have been through career changes, injury and sickness, losing loved ones, buying a home, new parenthood (times two) and looking forward to the arrival of our new little one.  We continue to change and grow but it is always closer together rather than farther apart. Our pastor introduced me to a quote by Deitrich Bonhoeffer a few years back: "It is not your love that sustains the marriage, but from now on, the marriage that sustains your love."  How perfect, right?  I made a covenant with my best friend five years ago today and through that promise to one another and our Lord, we continue to grow in love.  God is good and He is faithful.
